Eclipse Fun

By no doubt you’ve heard the news that on Monday, August 21, the contiguous United States will be able to view a Total Solar Eclipse.  According to NASA, the last total solar eclipse that passed through our country was on Feb. 26, 1979, and the next one (an Annular Solar Eclipse) will be on October 14, 2023.  Our region will be directly impacted (with 97% obscurity expected in Chatham County).

And, by no doubt, you’ve heard the news that school will be closed that day, (read the school board’s announcement here), creating feelings ranging from relief, (safety first), to panic (emergency child care plan!).

The TIMA Crew understands and wants to help.  So, here are a few tips that will make this experience the best.

Go to the science experts:

National Weather Service – you can find an interactive Path of Totality Map, Eclipse Countdown, Safety Information and more.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) – is a great resource where you can find local events, learn about the science related to eclipses, and fun activities (to name a few features).

Download this app:

Solar Eclipse Timer – has some pretty cool features including a “Partial Phase Sequence” that gives you a timed listing of when specific phases will be occuring at your exact location.

Laugh throughout the day: – Which parent doesn’t like kid-friendly jokes.  You’re kids will like them, too.

Do you have any other great eclipse-related resources?  Be sure to share them in the comments.

Also, remember to practice proper eye safety during the eclipse.  We’ll see everyone at school on Tuesday!

Spirit Wear Day Update

Thank you to one and all who have ordered your 2017-18 Spirit Wear shirts.  We have had a fantastic response from everyone.  We definitely could not do this without your support!  If you haven’t submitted your order, time is running out.  The deadline is tomorrow, Thursday, August 17th.  Click here for ordering info.

Regretfully, we have to push back our first Spirit Wear Day until Friday, September 1st.   We can not guarantee that our order will arrive in time for next week.  Instead of canceling, our fantastic and supportive school has allowed us to push back the day.

We are sorry for any inconvenience but do thank you for understanding.

CREW General Meeting @ TIMA Open House

Blimey!  The last week and a half has gone by fast.  School started off with a bang and word in the galley is that all students and staff have steady sea legs (like the pirate lingo?).  Since we weighed anchor at the Meet and Greet, the Crew has been busy swabbing the decks and unfurling the sails for a busy….and FUN…year ahead.

Because we are always looking for a few more recruits, be sure to come out and participate in this year’s first Crew General Meeting on Thursday, August 17 at 6pm.  Prior to TIMA’s Open House, you’ll be introducted to the Crew’s board, hear about some great events we are planning, and be able to sign up for your favorite activities.  If you need a light bite before the meeting, we’ll have pizza slices and soda/water for sale (come by early, we are expecting them to sell out).

We will continue accepting Family Membership applications, (we’ll have another raffle for those who sign up that night!).  It will also be your last chance to order Spirit Wear t-shirts by check or online through our TIMA Crew Square store (you didn’t think we forgot that, did you?).  You can always click on the links, print out the paperwork, and submit the orders to your child’s teacher.

If you are not able to attend we’ll be experimenting with live-streaming the meeting on Facebook.  Just go to the Tybee Island Maritime Academy page (be sure to “like” our school if you haven’t already) and be on the lookout for the broadcast.  Wish us luck!

We can’t wait to see you there!

Membership Drive @ the Meet and Greet

Were you at the Meet and Greet back on the 2nd?  We hope that it was a productive and informative afternoon for you and your TIMA students.

The Crew was thrilled to meet everyone who came by our tables.  We showed off our sample Spirit Wear T’s and took shirt orders and family membership applications.

Speaking of membership, everyone who signed up during the Meet and Greet was entered in a raffle.  We’d like to announce the winners and thank our generous donors (be sure to click on their links):

Paula Kinsey – $25 gift card, Chu’s Chevron

Bonnie Flaherty – Tickets for 2, Tybee Post Theater

Misty Hughes – Group surfing lesson, Hot Sushi Surf Shack

Marilee Rinderknect – Family membership, Massie Heritage Center

Thank you to everyone who joined our Crew!  If you haven’t yet, it’s not too late to print out a family membership application.  There is a $10 suggested donation and lots of opportunities for you to share your time and talents.  Please join, no matter what your contribution can be.

The more families that join our crew, the better our ship can sail!

Stingrays, it’s time to rock your Spirit Wear!

Click on the link below to print your Spirit Wear Order Form.  Please fill it out and return the form with cash or check payment to your child’s teacher or the TIMA front office. Deadline to turn in money and orders is August 17!  If you prefer to pay by credit card, you can order through our new online store!

17-18 Spirit Wear Order Forms PDF

All funds collected will support our school and CREW activities! (FYI: This form is for short-sleeved shirts only.)

Shirts can be worn on the last Friday of each month in place of your child’s uniform.  Spirit Wear days are subject to change, so be sure to check the Crew Calendar for 2017-18 dates!

Special thanks to the Glauner and Pederson Families for showing off this year’s shirts.
